Magnetic Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (mPNS) for Chronic Pain

Magnetic Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (mPNS) is an FDA-cleared form of non-invasive stimulation that treats chronic intractable post-traumatic and post-surgical pain.

It utilizes the same coil and technology that is used for TMS, but is applied directly on the areas of the body that are experiencing pain.

mPNS stimulates these nerves and “resets” the communication between these nerves and the brain. It helps to normalize the transmission of pain signals to the brain, resulting in alleviation of chronic and acute sensations of pain.

What does treatment look like?

During treatment, the magnetic coil is placed directly on the site of pain. Patients can expect to feel a rhythmic “tapping” or muscle twitching sensation.

Each individual session consists of 13 minutes of stimulation.

One round of mPNS treatment consists of 10 total sessions. 

Month #1:

Week 1: 1 session per day is administered for 3 consecutive days.

Weeks 2-4: 1 session is administered weekly.

Months #2 and #3:

1 session is administered every other week.

How does it work?

mPNS uses magnetic stimulation to stimulate peripheral nerves, which are nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord and are used in pain signaling. In conditions such as chronic pain, signaling between peripheral nerves and the brain can become disrupted due to injury, inflammation, nerve compression, or other forms of damage.

Unlike electrical stimulation, mPNS can target deeper laying nerves. It activates large myelinated neurons, motor nerves, and sensory nerves.

These magnetic pulses induce electric fields in the nerve tissues, and alters their excitability. This modulation helps normalize the transmission of pain signals to the brain.

By adjusting neural activity in this way, mPNS helps to alleviate both chronic and acute pain conditions.

mPNS vs. Electrical Stimulation

While mPNS and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) are both treatment options for chronic pain, they work differently.
